  • Taxing churches just for being churches would be counter-productive. What needs to happen is the current set of rules regulating what counts as a church and what doesn’t needs to be tightened and enforced. There are tons of shit people running churches as their own personal profit machines and those need shut down. The Methodist churches built in every town in America, for example, are only barely hanging on by a thread and bring more good to their neighborhood than they do harm; their loss would be tragic.

  • If exercise doesn’t work for you then you can now deduce with more confidence that your depression is not mild.

Exercise works for me, my depression is mild. I require a lot of running, no amount of power walking pulls me out of a funk, i need 3 or 4 days of doing 20-40 minute runs to get to the good place. If it’s not helping or you can’t then you definitely need medical and social support to get out of the hole. This article, and thus the discussion was not intended to belittle anyone who finds exercise does not help them.

I, personally, found the article encouraging because it reminds me that i need to be better about my exercise routines to stay in better mental health. This article is trying to talk to my circumstance, hence the words “mild depression”

  • What you are describing is absolutely not “mild depression”. I have seasonal and mild depression and exercising is absolutely a cure-all for me, when winter is running a bit too long i start getting back into running to get out of having to otherwise be on antidepressants seasonally.

My wife, on the other hand, has depression like you describe, and she requires a lot of support to keep her afloat. This article is definitely not talking to target your situation. I am so sorry you have to experience life the way you do, i hope for the treatments and support you find to bring the right balance for you to experience the full breadth of the joys of life

  • They can sure define the word “enlightenment” to be whatever they want. However, the spiritual concept traditionally referred to as “enlightenment” has been pretty consistent for millennia. Traditionally enlightened people would carry the traits of being at peace, able to experience joy through suffering, and having heightened sense of empathy and connectedness to those around them. All the billionaires i read about are selfish, miserable people with poor emotional intelligence and an insistence to project blame away from them; these are not traits of the enlightened

I think the typical answer is to start digging into the definition of “love”. I am personally of the opinion that the number of self serving, narrow ways to interpret the Bible significantly outweigh the number of holistic, neighborly interpretations. The history of Christianity is filled with selfish power hungry people using whatever means necessary to justify their quests for power and domination.

How the Bible is interpreted is a perpetually evolving art practiced differently by different group. Do the laws of the old testament apply to modern life? Is the book of Revelation a metaphor for how to live or a literal prophesy for the end of the world?

I personally find great amusement at some of the contrasts between what Jesus teaches and what are taught in the epistles. Most amusing, of course, is how openly Jesus associated with women vs what Paul keeps espousing at the end of 1 Corinth 14 and 1 Tomothy 2.

So to more succinctly state it, since God is manifested in significant part through our actions, the rules are ultimately made up and the points don’t matter. statements like “God loves everybody” is as a declaration of the state of the universe in so far as it is an admission of one’s own moral values. It is imperative to espouse and defend this narrative that God loves everybody because otherwise it becomes false.

If this constructed version of God doesn’t make sense, we can perfectly swap “God” and “Mother Nature” as they are interchangeable concepts. I find some rest in the belief that our existence aligns with the inherent nature of the universe, even if we can be real boneheads about it sometimes.

This idea would seem to rest on the logic that any given poor person would be less likely to be corrupted by power than a given rich person (presumably due to their experiences being poor). In my experience when you give someone who is used to destitution access to power and resources their instincts are incredibly self serving. Being part of the proletariat does not automatically indicate any amount of empathy, humility, self control, forward thinking, or any other characteristic of a good, fair leader.

  • Pretty sure the way we as the American people chose to receive this beating was that at one of the billionaire orgies between 2023 and 2024 Musk, absolutely trashed, turns to Soros and says “you think you’re so good for getting Obama elected in '08, well hold my beer and watch this!” The rest is redacted history that will make an excellent documentary in about 10-20 years
