It’s good. I hadn’t used Usenet until last year. You need a provider and an indexer. The provider is like an ISP that gives you access to Usenet. The indexer is like a search engine that tells you where in Usenet you can find this or that.

It works very well for new content with the arr stack. They do take things down via DMCA, but by the time things are taken down, your arr stack has grabbed what it needed. And it even though things are taken down, most of the content is still available.

You can use Usenet and torrent together in your arr stack as redundant sources.

Thanks. I haven’t had time to do much more than register and read a brief Usenet FAQ over on the fuck-spez site.

Just so I’m clear, DS is an indexer; not a provider, right? If that’s right, any suggestion on providers or how to find/choose one?

Yes, DS is an indexer. I recall looking at some wiki for a provider. I’m using Frugal news for provider.

I went with Eweka as a provider, don’t remember why.

You’ll also need a program to handle the downloading. I think there’s a few but the popular one seems to be SABnzbd. I am not sure if you need that with the *arrs though, since I don’t use those, but someone who does may be able to elucidate. And finally if you’re interested in the forum-esque newsgroups (likely not) you can access those through Thunderbird.

DS has affiliate links for recommended providers after logging in. I think they are deals too.

You can also cross-seed from Usenet to torrent sites, can be handy for getting ratio on private trackers
