European leaders divided over how far to accommodate Trump’s ‘wrecking ball’ politics and foreign policy
US Democrats will use a security summit this weekend to urge European leaders to stand up to Donald Trump, with the continent divided over how to keep the unpredictable US president on side.
Democrats at the annual Munich Security Conference will include some of Trump’s most outspoken critics, such as the governor of California, Gavin Newsom, the New York congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the Arizona senator Ruben Gallego and the Michigan governor, Gretchen Whitmer.
Newsom has already urged Europeans to realise that “grovelling to Trump’s needs” makes them “look pathetic on the world stage”, telling reporters at the World Economic Forum in Davos last month he “should have brought a bunch of knee pads”.
Newsom is a fascist genocide supporter who keeps having Nazis and Zionists on his podcast and agreeing with them. He set up a task force to hunt down college professors who are “antisemetic” meaning they teach the correct history of Palestine. I could go on and on Newsom is a wolf in wolves clothing
The fuckin irony

Bruh, they can’t do it themselves and they’re asking a whole other continent???
Yes, but also the party is not a monolith.
They should form a third party, as every other country has done when some people want to do things differently.
So, you’re already telling everyone you don’t understand the spoiler effect, basically advocating the opposition to assure their own loss.
Vote splitting is the most common cause of spoiler effects in FPP. In these systems, the presence of many ideologically-similar candidates causes their vote total to be split between them, placing these candidates at a disadvantage. This is most visible in elections where a minor candidate draws votes away from a major candidate with similar politics, thereby causing a strong opponent of both to win.
A spoiler campaign in the United States is often one that cannot realistically win but can still determine the outcome by pulling support from a more competitive candidate.
Any other bright ideas?
Exactly! Because the system is inherently flawed. Kind of that’s why I’m suggesting it. A dumpster fire, on top of a dumpster fire, on top of a dumpster fire all held together by duct tape. That’s life everywhere.
Ideally, yes. In practice, splitting their voter base in two would guarantee losing the presidency. The first past the post system of the US and UK needs to be reformed, not that their current major parties have any incentive to do so.
All of which is to say, it’s a difficult situation.
Meanwhile, people of the US urge Democrats to stand up to Trump.
Do they? Because they did jack shit in November to support that notion.
It has a tasty irony that this in Munich:
How about the damn Democrats stand up to Trump. Stop asking the world to fix your problems.
How do you suggest they do that? They’re the minority in both chambers of congress & already overwhelmingly oppose the president’s party on legislation. From roll call analysis
-
polarization is at the highest in the last several decades
-
Democrats have lately voted with higher party unity than Republicans
In the House and the Senate, the average party conformity score was higher for Democrats than Republicans over the nearly 18,000 total votes taken. Democrats in the House voted with their party 90.4 percent of the time; Republicans in the House, 89.3 percent of the time. In the Senate, the gulf was wider: Democrats lined up 89.8 percent of the time while Republicans did so only 86.6 percent of the time.
Over the past 20 years, Democrats have, in fact, been more likely to stick together on votes than have Republicans.
-
non-cooperation between parties is the highest it’s been for at least 6 decades & increasing
- the frequency of pairwise vote agreements cross-party is at a low & clearly declining
- pairwise vote agreement networks are clearly splitting by party.
They’re supporting protests against the president’s actions.
When the Rs are minorities they are wrenches in spokes and sand in the gears of the govt. The Ds “try” and fold at the first opportunity. They could have prosecuted Trump immediately after J6 but waited years. They could have investigated the rigging of the 2024 election and didn’t. They’ve enabled, aided, and abetted the Rs facism and authoritarianism.

You have Democrats trying to control criminal outlaws with laws. See the problem?
This, exactly. trump and everything he represents is only ever been made possible by the feckless, equivocating cowardice of a Democratic Party that is more organized around fundraising than it is about accomplishing anything. Newsom is the complete embodiment of those failures and his posturing for the next presidency represents a continuation of them.
cowardicecollaboration.
We could use the help. But the miserable gormlessness of the Democrats is a big part of the problem.
I understand that it isn’t fair and that we don’t “deserve” help, but Trump is a cancer on the earth itself.
European leaders and OP when Trump inevitably attacks and invades a NATO nation because they don’t take him seriously:

You first, you gutless swine.
Well said. Do Democrats understand optics? Because I swear US propaganda has cooked their brains just as bad as MAGA. They’re asking Europe to do the job they completely failed at doing for a decade? Please shut the fuck up Dems, all you’re good for is asking others to do your jobs better than you can. FFS.
Unreal, isn’t it?
They just can’t deal with it themselves because they have to compromise or lose something. So they ask others.
A nation that told others to mind their own business when those others said they needed to vote.
The administration truly does reflect the country and its refusal to take responsibility.
I was here to say the same thing.
“Europe should do our job!”
- Some US guy
Every time… Oh Canada. Come save us from ourselves. Oh… I’ll just have tots and pears that the next government will save us… Dude!! Grow a pair!! No one is coming to save you from what you blindly walked into!! Man. I’m so tired of America.
It’s still in our interest to try to change the trajectory of the US.
Pot meet kettle. Fuck idon’t want Gavin to run. Would much prefer AOC.
What do people think of Mark Cuban? If I had to choose between Gavin or Mark if he decided to run. I’d easily go with Mark
What do people think of Mark Cuban?
Never another rich person.
I don’t want president Gavin Newsom either, but I don’t see how anyone could possibly think “A reality TV businessman billionaire who’s BLUE on the TV charts is what this country needs right now”
I just like him because he at least understands there is a serious problem with healthcare in this country and it needs changed. While I dont doubt he’s probably not for universal, if we’re not going to get a actual leftist. He’d be the one I choose
And he also said tariffs hurt every American and we are the ones who pay it.
I mean, I hope we don’t end up in a situation where he’s the guy on the ballot. I really don’t think a billionaire is going to fix much. I don’t think they should be an actual thing that exists, but that’s beside the point. I’d vote for an actual working class champion in the primary though and hope to get the opportunity to vote for them in the main election. And if it ended up being a billionaire on the ballot vs. another MAGA, obviously I’m voting for the candidate that has the best chance defeat the MAGA because I was raised right and despise Nazis. But we’re in this mess in no small part because of the billionaires and wannabes, so I’m getting tired of picking less-bad when we should be running a real champion for progressive ideas to help raise working people.
Everyone in here saying, “why don’t you stand up to him, Dems?”
Guys, the Democrats don’t do that. I don’t think they even know how to do that. The whole concept is so alien to them you might as well be asking them to surf the rings of Saturn. No, no, the Democrats don’t stand up to rich and powerful people, they gargle their balls. They can get those things so deep in their donor holes that they can tickle the scrot with their uvulas.
If you’re looking for the Dems to stand up to Trump, you’re barking up the wrong tree, friends.
Meanwhile they’re limp-wristing their own resistance and giving him everything he wants after just the faintest complaint.
