Ah see, I don’t consider Disability as government assistance like SNAP and WIC. I consider disability as part of an actual modern Universal Healthcare solution. Disability fundamentally is a healthcare issue not an employment issue, even though the crossover is pretty large because of our fucked up system.
Your employer doesn’t have any control over your disability (unless they caused it, but that’s a different issue outside this). They shouldn’t be punished for that. But hiring employees at a wage so far below a realistic livable wage that they qualify for programs like SNAP is 100% within the company’s control. No one working a full time job should be close to qualifying for those programs.
1.) Disability isn’t just workers comp., and assuming it’s injury-based or in-born is imprecise as well.
2.) Allowing employers to “pay” such criminally low wages is one thing, but failing* to enforce anti-discrimination laws re: disabilities, et al, is a whole 'nother ball of shit.
*/ the system is working exactly as intended, fyi
3.) I agree with the rest of your statements, though. 🖖🏼
That gets dicey real quick, considering disability is government assistance, so unless you’re also wanting privatized disability care 🤫
(because we can totally trust our employers to provide the best, most unbiased medical care to the vulnerable, yep)
