I just use my safe can opener on those as well, works fine. It uses pressure to split the rolled over seam around the edge, so it doesn’t matter too much what kinda can it is.

4·1 year agoAn Arizona prosecutor said the man arrested in the shooting of a Democratic National Committee office in suburban Phoenix had more than 200 guns and over 250,000 rounds of ammunition in his home, leading law enforcement to believe he may have been planning a mass casualty event.
Assuming he was one of the Hecatoncheires, perhaps. But while looking for a photo of one, I came across this very convincing evidence that he was - and that some kid called “Percy Jackson” incited this whole thing.

4·1 year agoFrom the reference on the wiki page, it should be published as part of The Portable Sixties Reader on p208-212 - https://annas-archive.org/md5/1a4c9e7d4519296b4947e5efdd8ef024 - just downloading it to read it myself.
Edit: That link was a large pdf that failed to download, changed to a more sensible epub.
I can see it - the top-right green squiggle has a bit of an Amigara Fault vibe to it.

were riddled with bullets, smuggling large bricks of cocaine in their vests instead of armour plates, taunting Poseidon, ignoring a very ominous fortune cookie, wearing those nasty falling-apart ten-year-old boots they’d been told to throw out for seven years, had not completed the fishman supersoldier programme to develop gills, and were carrying twenty pairs of cotton socks to protect several bottles of Klingon bloodwine. As a result theysank.”

5·1 year agoThere was a kids show with that plot called The Odyssey. The main character was fighting through a fantasy land that reflected their struggle to reawaken - I think I liked it? I can’t really remember.
Here’s a nicer existential musing (the second paragraph, but the first is related to it):

With some commentary:

7·1 year agoOzymandias simply took superheroism to the logically insane extreme that overwhelming violence could bully the entire world into not being so naughty. Since that was more or less how all the other vigilantes behaved on their smaller scale, it’s no surprise that they’d bow before it - they were still punching atomized symptoms in the face and he’s the Very Smart lad who stood up and said “what if we live in a society and that is the bad guy… so what if we punched society”. He’s perhaps not quite as far gone as the Dark Judges, but…
___Well, maybe. His scheme relies first on trusting the immediate decision-making of a couple hundred military and political types around the world, “society” is pretty much out of the loop until a few days after they avoid triggering MAD by reflex.

7·1 year agoIt’s a devil to let happen, but half-asleep I sometimes hear a kind of susurrus that seems to be composed of half-heard things from throughout the day. But focusing on it causes it to disintegrate - like grabbing at smoke. Maintaining that non-focused awareness is really tricky and I normally just forget and fall asleep.

12·1 year agoMight have some parallel to that German noble who tried that recent coup, and the QAnon/Jan 6 silliness? So much masturbatory daydreaming over the inevitability of some amorphous Cause claiming the throne of heaven that there’s no brainspace left to seriously consider that there might be suffering involved for their actual person.
It might be considered “good” for getting your stormtroopers to charge across open ground (if only once per stormtrooper), but possibly not the best for resilient leadership.

5·2 years agoIt’s very, very, similar to GURPS Transhuman Space - mainly adding Cortical Stacks from Altered Carbon, spessmagic, and an apocalypse.
There wouldn’t be many problems just running the setting with THS.
Birds?
I don’t know if the power density would actually be high enough to cook birds… but I don’t really care to check because it’ll never be built in reality so real-world performance is irrelevant, and sci-fi maser satellites are cool. Unless you’re a bird.

TOS has some really great episodes - the benefit of just getting actual scifi authors to submit scripts. And then it has, uh, well some of it is probably also due to the scifi authors…
