Aren’t switching mode power supplies smaller and more efficient than regular AC transformers anyway?

151·11 days agoPeople are essentially internal combustion engines that burn food. Trying to capture that energy in ways that increases the load on us just causes us to need more calories. That’s counter productive as you could just burn said food itself to get energy, and agriculture is an energy and environmentally intensive industry to begin with.

1·1 month agoYou don’t get it. I am saying that indeed the existence of something is the thing that has been politicised. Some people legitimately believe that transgender is not a real thing and is instead some kind of a delusion or mental illness. Even ignoring that coming out as a concept is political. We wouldn’t have the concept of coming out if being queer hadn’t been prosecuted and stigmatized in the first place. Being gay or trans would just be a property someone has like having brown eyes.
I don’t think so. I have seen LLMs that think better and communicate better than many humans.

4·1 month agoI think the main things that are holding us back from this vision at the moment is reproduction and the quality of gender affirming care. You still need to have male and female to have children and for now we can’t change which you belong to. If we could do like the Culture and have people that father one child and give birth to another this would all be a lot simpler.
I actually think that without gender roles and norms many people would end up presenting as what we would consider non-binary today. I don’t think it’s actually true that male and female people actually behave like men and women inherently for the most part. I think the kinds of behaviour that’s actually determined by chromosomes and hormones is fairly limited.

2·1 month agoNow this is something I can get behind. I am tired of gender roles. Whatever happened to gender abolition?

72·1 month agoNope. The issue of trans people has basically always been political in my lifetime. I am not saying it should be political, or that it will always be considered political, but to say it isn’t political right now is ignoring the reality and is dismissing the real issues faced by transgender people. You can’t change reality by making statements because reality is not performative. The way the world works does not revolve around what you say or what you think.

31·1 month agoI did ask. Specifically I asked what you were talking about. All you really had to say was Visa and MasterCard are USA companies that handle card transactions. If you had clarified that initially you wouldn’t be getting downvoted to hell.
If hormonal birth control existed for AMAB people I am sure some of us would use it. I would even be willing to try it if I actually had sex regularly. On the other hand female condoms and diaphragms exist yet I rarely hear about them being used.

121·1 month agoMy parents are not from the USA and don’t have USA bank accounts or credit cards and have had no problems renting a car in Europe or anywhere else they went. I really don’t get what you mean. I don’t see why you specifically need an American card and not just a credit card from any modern country.
How the fuck do you not see that you are the problem here? This was a very obvious joke about how Nazis named themselves National Socialists. How have you turned this into an argument? What the actual fuck is wrong with people on this website.

18·1 month agoNo you don’t? What are you talking about?

I don’t think that’s actually true. To do AC to AC conversion at grid frequencies normally requires large inefficient transformers. A PC power supply is an example of a switch mode power supply. Basically what happens is: AC mains -> DC (at mains voltage) -> AC (high frequency, mains voltage) -> transformer -> AC (low voltage, still high frequency) -> DC (low voltage). Why do all this? Because doing the voltage conversion at grid frequency would need a much bigger transformer. They could just do the voltage conversion at grid frequency and only have to rectify once with no conversion back to ac, but it’s actually less efficient and requires more expensive hardware. So actually DC to DC conversion is more efficient, even if it means using high frequency AC in the middle. Not all switch mode supplies use this AC trick, though they do all involve switching current. buck and boost converters are used in smartphones, laptops, motherboards don’t have any transformer and are incredibly compact and efficient. The fact that many many things also need DC would be a bonus. Recitifying single phase AC at low frequency is not the most efficient thing in the world. Three phase is better, but having straight DC and only needing to change voltage would probably be best.
