Realists (who sometimes appear to be centrists) wish many leftists would value actual harm reduction over purity.

4·7 days agoCome on journalists. It’s not “protests leave”. It’s “federal agents cause” or “police cause” residents to suffer because of the escalatory practices of the police.

Technology@lemmy.world•Mamdani to kill the NYC AI chatbot caught telling businesses to break the law— New York mayor says terminating the ‘unusable’ bot will help close a budget gapEnglish
161·9 days agoThe only way a chatbot can accurately answer basic level questioning is if staff has put in time to do the documentation. If they have, you frequently don’t even need the chatbot because simple web searches will show up the question and answer or one of the major chatbots will have already indexed the documentation and can answer the question for free.

Police are rarely under the strong (or even weak) control of elected representatives in the United States (and probably anywhere.)

501·16 days agoReps. Henry Cuellar (Texas), Jared Golden (Maine), Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (Wash.), Laura Gillen (N.Y.), Don Davis (N.C.), Tom Suozzi (N.Y.) and Vicente Gonzalez (Texas) voted for it. They should be primaried and vilified. Jefferies didn’t whip the vote, but he did vote against it.
Now it’s important to pressure senators to not pass the bill.

It frequently is just some of the people in those countries doing it.
This doesn’t mean that no one is responsible, but that not everyone is responsible to the same degree. Trump and his enablers? Totally responsible. Everyone else? Lesser responsibility depending on what they did to enable in the past and what they’re doing now to reaist.
The cost of energy inputs for desalinization and mitigating the environmental impacts of saline outflows make it impractical for many users of water (many irrigation, agriculture, and industrial users.) The Sun still operates the best desalinization plant on a global scale.

This is a challenge all distributions have which want to keep stability, which means shipping older versions (ideally with long term support) with only security updates for the lifetime of the distribution. It’s totally ok for upstream developers to not support any of those old versions too; they’re not being paid either.
The openssl change was communicated with upstream at the time, but no one from upstream pointed out the issue (not surprisingly, because the change seemed like an innocuous fix to an unassigned variable.)
We (Debian) fix bugs and send upstream the changes all the time, so this kind of thing happens. (Upstreams introduce these kind of bugs too; it’s the nature of software development.)

5·1 month agoNo safe amount means that any exposure increases your risk of bad outcomes. The increase may be negligible, but if it’s detectable, it’s there. There are many compounds that do have a safe level (like water) but may be hazardous above a specific level.
A more useful metric is often the number of excess cancers (or deaths) caused by different levels of exposure. But that requires nuance which is hard to communicate effectively.

You probably already know this, but there is a collectors market for player pianos and other automated musical instruments. See AMICA in the US. (Not sure about non automated ones; heavily depends on the instrument.)

Surely you can think of some cases in your political life where you had to choose between a bad and a worse option?
Simple things, like voting strategically for the least bad of two options in FPTP voting systems, even if the candidate isn’t perfect. Like voting for Lincoln (racist white supremacist) over Douglas (enslaver).
Promoting and voting for the best candidate possible who is likely to win their election, even when they aren’t as good as you wish they were.
