if you don’t trust shady chat apps but still need to use WhatsApp, have a look at mautrix-whatsapp, a bridge between the open source matrix and WhatsApp. you can self host both your own matrix server and the bridge or use a public instance that has the bridge enabled. Then, just use one of the many matrix clients and use it as normal, chat, reply, send images, location sharing, etc etc
